The water pump uses centrifugal force to be able to send water to the outside while it rotates. This action causes fluid to be continuously drawn from the pump's center. The pump inlet is situated close to the center. This design enables fluid returning from the radiator to hit the pump vanes. The pump vanes are strategically placed to fling the fluid outside of the pump so it goes in the engine.
The fluid initially flows through the engine block and cylinder head previous to exiting the pump. The fluid then goes into the radiator before finally coming back to the pump.
